No fewer than 1,426,926 candidates have their chances of securing university admission in the country this year dashed as they failed to obtain the basic entry requirement.
The candidates obtained only two credits in the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination released by the West African Examinations Council on Monday.
The Head, National Office of WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu, announced the release of the results in Lagos.
The candidates, he said, constituted 84.31 per cent of the total candidates who sat for the examination.
According to him, 1,692,435 candidates, comprising 929,075 males and 763,360 females, sat for the examinations in the country.
To secure admission in the nation’s university, a candidate is required to have at least, credit passes in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics in WASSCE or the National Examinations Council.
Eguridu, who admitted that there was a marginal decline in the performance of the candidates this year unlike in the last two years, added that 145,795 candidates, representing 8.61 per cent had their results withheld for alleged examination malpractice.
Giving further breakdown, the HNO noted that 1,293,389 candidates, representing 76.42 per cent, obtained credits and above in three subjects, while 1,148,262 candidates, representing 67.84 per cent, obtained credits and above in four subjects.
He added, “Of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 791,227 candidates, representing 46.75 per cent obtained six credits and above, while 982,472 candidates representing 58.05 per cent, obtained five credits and above.
“A total of 529,425 candidates, representing 31.28 per cent, obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics. When compared to the 2012 and 2013 May/June WASSCE diets, there is marginal decline in the performance of candidates.”
On the withheld results, Eguridu said, their cases were being investigated and that the reports would be presented in November to the Nigeria examinations Committee for consideration.
The HNO, who urged candidates to check details of their results online in the next 24 hours, added that 150 blind candidates sat for the examination.
According to him, 21 of them, representing 14 per cent obtained credits in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
I am so happy today that i was able to upgrade four of my waec results that were very bad i never believed in Waec upgrade but seeing all my friend who had contacted Mr Andrew in waec office to upgrade and release some of their withheld result and in just 24 hours they went back on net and check the result again and the results was upgraded to a new grade i felt loss and i contacted him two days ago and now my result was also upgraded,they say seeing is believing i have seen with my eyes that Mr Andrew is the only man that can solve any waec problem concerning upgrade or withheld result,if you are still there doubting or don't believe waec upgrade and your waec result are pending or you failed your waec then you are missing something you have to contact this man before your mates live you my fellow 2014 waec candidates here na Mr Andrew number 08152240666 or (+2348152240666) just call him.
